Investigative Reporter/Editor

Job Summary

The New Bedford Light, a nonprofit digital news startup (newbedfordlight.org), is seeking an experienced investigative reporter/editor to delve into the biggest issues facing this complex and rapidly changing city on the Southeast coast of Massachusetts. The nation's most valuable fishing port (of Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” fame) is now poised to become the epicenter of the nation's emerging wind industry. Issues of immigration, jobs, education, health, housing, gentrification, race and policing are ripe for exploration.

We envision a player/coach role requiring five years of experience and a track record of hard-hitting accountability reporting. Competitive salary, benefits and a big opportunity to help lead a new and ambitious news organization. Must be highly collaborative, inventive and adventurous. Multi-media experience a plus. BIPOC candidates encouraged.

New Bedford is small and highly diverse seaside city of 100,000, approximately 30 miles from Providence, RI, and 58 miles south of Boston. Here’s what The New York Times had to say about The New Bedford Light just after we launched last June:
