The Houston Chronicle, named the Best Newsroom in Texas for 3 years in a row, seeks a Managing Editor to lead its newsgathering operations, including the newsroom’s quest to grow and maintain an engaged readership on all platforms. She/he must have a grasp of the operations of all newsroom departments, spearheading the decision-making on development of key stories and content that will resonate digitally. She/he must set the tone for an aggressive newsroom that is hell-bent on capturing and maintaining an engaged digital audience, leading a process of breaking and exploiting the stories of the day and planning for significant enterprise.
We want an inspiring and creative leader who has a track record of producing high-impact and ambitious journalism. This leader is someone who has experience running major breaking news as well as overseeing significant enterprise stories.
We want someone who can elevate the work of the entire newsroom while also showing the empathy and care a newsroom in 2021 needs.
Along with the journalism, this editor will establish proper metrics to gauge our effectiveness with our audience for consumption and subscriptions. The managing editor will play a key role in recruiting and evaluating employees with an eye towards helping them grow; and will consult regularly with the executive editor on broader strategic and budget issues that involve the senior management team.
Qualified candidates will have news management/leadership experience, along with a proven track record of developing audience and journalists. College degree required.
