At this moment when accurate and deeply reported news has never been more important, NPR and member stations in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa are launching a regional “news hub” built on collaboration, with a focus on investigations. Our mission is to create journalism with impact, increase enterprise and investigative projects and strengthen coverage of the Midwest for local, regional, and national audiences. We aim to both reflect and serve the broad range of people who call our communities home.
We’re looking for a dynamic, creative leader to help define the editorial vision for this four-state collaboration and develop a strategy for executing it. We need a highly organized manager who collaborates and communicates well with a wide range of stakeholders. This is also a hands-on role, so the managing editor must be able to edit audio and digital work, coach reporters, and make quick decisions about breaking news.
The managing editor will be an employee of KCUR in Kansas City, Mo., but could choose to make your home base at one of the other partner stations: St. Louis Public Radio, Iowa Public Radio in Des Moines, or NET Nebraska in Lincoln. NPR is also a managing partner.
This is a three-year, grant-funded position. The Midwest Newsroom partners intend to raise funds to sustain the position beyond that period.

-Help the partner stations incorporate investigative, data-driven reporting into their journalism.
-Supervise, lead, and inspire the regional news hub staff, which will include an investigative editor, investigative reporter, and data journalist. This includes assigning and editing audio and digital stories.
-Serve as a central point of contact for editorial leaders at the stations and at NPR.
-Ensure stories are considered through diverse perspectives, so they are inclusive, equitable and reflect the audiences they serve.
-Strengthen the digital journalism capacity among the partner stations and the regional newsroom and boost the visual storytelling capacity.
-Visit stations across the region (post-pandemic) and set up regular training opportunities for station and regional reporters.
-Help stations and NPR identify and reach new audiences through storytelling and new products on all platforms.
-Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to manage workers in a variety of remote locations -as well as in-person direct reports.
-Commitment to editorial standards of accuracy, thoroughness, ethics, balance and diversity.
-Ability to exercise sound news judgment and generate factual, error-free copy on deadline.
-Ability to think strategically, set goals and use metrics to track progress towards meeting those goals.
-Familiarity with investigative projects, and experience reporting, producing and editing investigative work.
-Knowledge of the issues, cultures, people, geography and news opportunities in the Midwest.
-Experience with and credibility in Midwest journalism and/or with NPR.
-Experience in public media.
-Experience leading multi-partner collaborations.
-Experience developing new products.
-Ability to solve problems, manage complexity and be resilient.
