Researcher

The Dallas Morning News has an exciting opportunity for a researcher to support research and reporting for local journalism. We’re seeking someone who is curious and skilled at digging deep to track and uncover hard-to-find sources and information. You’ll be charged with using open intelligence tools and public records to support in-depth reporting and information analysis. We are looking for someone who is flexible and a fast learner who is organized and can work independently to help create stories, employ new intelligence tools and acquire information.

This is a position where you can define and direct your own role. The possibilities are endless to partner with investigative and breaking news teams.

Job requirements:

• Mastery of public records, databases and open source intelligence tools
• Supports research and reporting for breaking news and investigative projects
• Monitor sources, social media, track events and identify breaking news updates
• Uses digital forensics tools to evaluate validity of information, misinformation, disinformation
• Researches facts and figures for stories, news and current events
• Assist in on-going story coverage through digital research and expert sourcing
• Assists with election coverage, manages candidate background checks
• Completes public information requests, acquires data and helps create datasets
• Develops and maintains relationships with sources and experts
• Works in a fast-paced environment against deadlines
• Helps train newsroom staff on research, reporting techniques and technologies

Bachelor’s degree required. Coursework in journalism, research and reporting is helpful. Coursework or master’s degree in information sciences a plus.

1 to 3 years experience in journalism and either research, writing, data science, analytics, tech tools and newsrooms preferred.

Open source intelligence tools, digital forensics, public records, scraping tools, Python, SQL, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript experience is a plus.
