Job Summary

Your Role:

Minnesota Public Radio News is seeking a senior editor to help lead investigative reporting projects within our team and with our local media partners around the country. This position is part of our local media accountability initiative, a grant-funded effort to elevate investigative reporting at local media outlets in select cities. The senior editor leads investigative collaborations within our team and with external partners, helps with story selection, edits audio and digital stories, coordinates shared resources and helps navigate reporting challenges. MPR News is dedicated to helping meet the urgent need for local investigative journalism. We’re looking for an editor who’s passionate about furthering that mission. The senior editor must be driven to hold the powerful to account, produce in-depth journalism in the public interest, and help elevate the work of local journalists. MPR News is based in Saint Paul, MN, but we’ll consider remote candidates for this position.

Compensation Range: $77,400 - $120,800/yr. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

Position Responsibility:

  • Guide teams of journalists, including the MPR News team and our partners, on high-level investigative and enterprise projects.
  • Oversee partnerships with media outlets in at least four markets across the country.
  • Edit in-depth accountability stories for radio and digital.
  • Work closely with members of the MPR News investigations team on multiple projects at once.
  • Help local partners select worthy topics for investigation and assist them in overcoming reporting challenges.
  • Work with MPR News Deputy Managing Editor for investigations on partnership and story strategy.
  • Oversee data analysis and work with MPR News Data Reporters and Research Lab to present our findings through interactive visuals.
  • Help share our work with national media partners and spot local projects that could become national stories.
  • Help devise promotion plans for our work on all platforms.
  • Assist partners and colleagues in meeting grant deliverables.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of journalism experience, including significant editing experience.
  • Experience leading reporting teams
  • Experience with accountability journalism as an editor or reporter, including experience with public records and data projects.
  • Experience leading investigative projects and editing audio storytelling preferred but not required.
