The Press Democrat, winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting, is seeking a Senior News Director/Local News to spearhead our efforts to elevate our digital and print news report and bring greater depth and sophistication to our enterprise reporting and investigative projects. The Senior News Director/Local Content works in tandem with the Executive Editor and the Senior News Director/Digital Growth to lead the news operation of our Santa Rosa, Calif., newsroom and will play an influential role in leveraging the daily content generated across Sonoma Media Investments, our parent company. This role focuses on four key responsibilities:
1) Conceiving and delivering high-impact, high-quality journalism with a strong emphasis on signature enterprise and revelatory public service work that grows our audience. In our Newsroom, we believe content is king.
2) Elevating our organization’s digital sophistication and expanding our digital footprint, with an emphasis on new subscriptions and retention of existing ones.
3) Working with our leadership team to recruit AND retain talented journalists from around the country, with a special emphasis on attracting candidates who bring diversity to our organization. This is an organizational priority.
4) Coaching and developing journalists hungry for hands-on training to help them break and analyze important news, create stories with power and clarity and bring crucial context that helps our audience make sense of life in Wine Country. We will want to hear about your track record in this important area.

Organized and thinks digital first from planning coverage and setting deadlines, to working with the digital team to prepare and push out optimized content across all platforms.
Work with our editors and your direct reports to identify and focus on issues of interest to our readers and produce high-engagement content, including accountability, solutions, enterprise and investigative journalism.
Work with the executive editor to collaborate with news, photo, sports, features and digital teams to make sure our best work is surfaced in print and online and to share ideas and determine the best use of resources.
Directs and champions investigative and First Amendment journalists.
Help staff identify and better engage with underserved communities and broaden our source base such that we regularly include people from minority communities when planning coverage and in our journalism.
Work with the executive editor and an inter-departmental team to increase digital subscriptions and work with SMI editors to produce and share content.
Monitors real-time metrics to develop a clear picture of audience needs.
Provides excellent customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
Represents the newspaper to community leaders and members of the community as needed.
This position will involve night and weekend work.
