Specialty Producer - Real-Time Depth

Job Summary

WTKR/WGNT, The E.W. Scripps station in Norfolk, Virginia is searching for a Specialty Producer to create impactful journalism daily. The Specialty Producer researches and produces compelling stories and segments daily for multiple platforms, which includes news of the day, depth components, investigations and special projects. The Specialty Producer will further our station’s mission to tell stories that are important to the people who live, work and play in Coastal Virginia and Northeast North Carolina.   • Researches, develops, and produces live newscast segments, stories and special projects. This includes live or prerecorded newscasts/local programs as well as editing or repurposing existing content to showcase and enhance the product in a unique way.
  • Writes and edits scripts for broadcast, creates graphics to support and enhance the copy
  • Works with editors to utilize video and graphics to visually enhance the story
  • Works closely with assignment desk, broadcast and digital producers, managers, video editors and field crews daily
  • Work closely with investigative reporters, photographers and managers to oversee investigative content calendar
  • Pitch enterprise stories that are impactful to the community, research facts and conduct interviews
  • Provide depth and context to the big story of the day, including breaking news and severe weather
  • Ability to fill in produce for daily newscasts, special events, breaking news or severe weather coverage and part of weekend on call rotation
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years as a television news producer
  • Background in enterprise or investigative journalism preferred


  • Knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel law
  • Proficiency with live news production, including the creation of rundowns, producer made graphics systems and the ability to command the control room
  • Knowledge and proficiency in producing newscast segments
  • Solid understanding and demonstration of multimedia file formats and strong computer skills
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws impacting operations
  • Must be a team player and adapt to developing situations quickly
  • Must be an excellent conversational writer with solid news judgement and a positive attitude
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Prior knowledge of ENPS and Final Cut Pro (or similar systems) preferred
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required. In addition, proof of insurance and liability coverage may be required.
