APMG's primary operating divisions Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio and American Public Media offer multi-regional FM broadcast channels, website, mobile and social media channels, live events, national content creation and distribution. Together, these divisions operate 49 public radio stations and 42 translators serving regional audiences in eight states from Minnesota, Michigan and the Upper Midwest to Idaho and California; distribute a portfolio of more than twenty national programs reaching nearly 20MM listeners weekly through 1,000 radio stations; serve rapidly growing audiences on digital, social and mobile platforms; and produce an increasing and diverse array of podcasts featuring the best in food, culture, entertainment, mental health, water, early brain development, business and investigative journalism.

Your Role:

As the Senior Research Associate, you are part of the APM Research Lab ( In this role, you will help establish APM Research as a valued source of credible research and analysis, useful to informing a wide variety of news outlets, both within and outside of American Public Media, as well as the broader public.

Your role will plan and conduct literature reviews, data analysis, and/or original research that useful to American Public Media and the broader community. Disseminate the results through written reports, presentations, web content, social media, and other means. Manage projects, budgets, and supervise employees as needed.

Minimum Compensation: $64,300 annually. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities

Design research and analysis projects (approximately 15%)

Consult/collaborate with stakeholders in developing research and analysis projects
In consultation with supervisor, propose research and analysis projects, ranging from short and less formal (e.g., blog posts and internal briefs) to longer-term and formal (e.g., developing formal workplans for use in responding to requests for proposals and contracts).
Recommend sampling procedures, measurement strategies, data collection procedures, and data analysis procedures, and data visualization modes, in consultation with supervisor.
Unit and project management (approximately 15%)

Coordinate activities within unit, with staff in other departments (news, digital, events, marketing, etc.), and with external vendors or partners.
Monitor & regularly update relevant stakeholders on the timing and budget considerations, making adjustments to the design and procedures, as needed.
Consult with supervisor and client to identify and resolve any arising problems and issues.
In consultation with supervisor, determine priorities among competing projects.
Help develop, implement, and continually improve unit-wide processes and procedures.
Conduct research and analysis (approximately 30%)

Conduct or contribute to research and analysis activities appropriate to the project at hand, possibly including, but not limited to:
Literature reviews
Key informant interviews.
Focus groups.
Surveys via phone, web, in-person, mixed method, etc.
Identifying and assembling data from appropriate sources.
Analyzing data using statistical software packages.
Preparing tables, charts, and data visualizations.
Develop and implement quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy and replicability of analysis, including documenting procedures
Report research and analysis results (approximately 25%)

In consultation with supervisor and other stakeholders, identify appropriate audience(s) and vehicle(s) for disseminating research and analysis results, and contribute to the development of these communications, possibly including, but not limited to:
Formal joint- and sole-authored written reports (includes collaborating with research team, editing, providing and receiving feedback).
Research briefs, blog posts, and newsletter articles.
Data visualizations
Web copy and visual content
Social media promotion
Other research and analysis-related material useful for news content including radio, digital, or print formats.
Editing materials prepared by other team members and suggesting improvements.
Assist with the development and implementation of events or forums focused on research and analysis topics, as needed.
Develop and implement quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy, excellence, and “common voice” in reporting.
Unit and talent management (5-15%)

Help to develop strategic priorities and business opportunities for the unit.
Give work direction and guidance to staff, including limited training as needed.
Assist with recruiting and hiring staff, interns, or volunteers, possibly including developing job ads, interviewing, and checking references.
Other duties as assigned (0-10%).

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in research-related field
10+ years of relevant work experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Desire to perform all aspects of research and analysis in a manner that strives toward objectively-identified results and conclusions as opposed to favoring pre-conceived opinions or personal/political biases.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to see patterns and stories in information and data.
Excellent communicator in a variety of formats (formal and informal writing, presenting, etc.)
Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
Ability to establish work priorities and manage workload.
Ability to document processes and develop recommendations for improved processes.
Maintains working knowledge of demographic, economic, social and related trends and innovations in data offerings and tools. Incorporates new data and modes of communicating that data, as appropriate.
Ability to effectively work within a team to achieve organization goals.
Proficient at using Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Proficiency with intermediate data analysis and use of one or more statistical software packages.
Preferred Skills and Experience:

PHD. in research-related field.
Proficiency with a website content management system.
Ability to represent data in modern visualization software, such as Tableau
Hands-on experience with a wide variety of research methods and projects.
Experience with large data sets.
Experience working with the media
Experience using social media.
Experience contributing to forums and events.
Experience recruiting, coaching, and developing talent.
Ability to inspire and lead staff.
