Job Summary

The Chronicle of Philanthropy is seeking a Staff Writer, Partnerships to join a new collaboration that The Chronicle forged with the Associated Press to help a wider audience of readers understand one of the most under-covered and influential sectors of American society: the nonprofit world with its nearly $6 trillion in assets.

The mission is to produce reporting that helps the general public learn more about how their giving and volunteering affects their communities.

What you’ll do:

Report and write daily and midlevel stories along with newsworthy trend stories about nonprofits, charities and the communities they serve.
Collaborate with the editor to produce stories to pitch to the Associated Press.
Work with other journalists in the Chronicle newsroom to add sources, data or context to stories, as needed, to broaden their appeal to readers beyond the nonprofit sector.
Partner with the Chronicle’s visuals and social media teams to help produce more multimedia content and to promote our stories through social media.
Write occasional in-depth features for our monthly magazine.
Partner with the editor to connect with reporters at community newspapers and college newspapers.

Preferred qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years’ experience working for a professional publication or information service. (College newspaper experience and professional internships may be considered as part of the three years of experience.)
Demonstrated ability to research topics and distill them into lively, easy to read articles and digital content.
Strong storytelling (print and digital) skills.
Ability to identify trends related to topics that involve philanthropy and nonprofits, such as education, arts, the environment, or social change is a plus.
Ability to collaborate across teams at the Chronicle and the Associated Press.

This position is funded by the Lilly Endowment through 2023. The position may extend beyond that but depends on additional funding.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Chronicle of Higher Education has taken appropriate measures to ensure the safety of its staff members.
