Description

The nine tentmates were among 32,000 Cubans who fled Fidel Castro's island in the summer of 1994, only to be detained for more than a year at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Now, home is in Louisville, Ky., Miami, Chicago, Portland, Ore., Las Vegas and Harrison, N.J. The Sun-Sentinel chronicled the lives of the nine balseros as they struggled through their first year in a new land.
