Newsday (Long Island, N.Y.) conducts a four-month investigation of New York City's methadone system by talking with patients, counselors and experts, and by reviewing court, regulatory and financial documents; finds 60 percent of methadone patients use illegal drugs, and many trade methadone for cocaine; finds hundreds of deaths from methadone-related overdoses every year; the system actually contributes to the AIDS crisis, June 11-14, 1989.
