We are seeking an experienced freelance investigative journalist for a sensitive, confidential assignment involving institutional accountability and community-based reporting. The project requires strong field skills, careful source handling, and the ability to navigate complex environments with professionalism and discretion.

Responsibilities

Conduct on-site reporting and gather firsthand information

Interview individuals connected to the subject matter, including vulnerable sources

Review publicly available records and help verify key information

Capture basic photos or observational notes as needed

Provide clear reporting memos and evidence summaries

Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of the assignment

Requirements

Demonstrated experience in investigative or accountability reporting

Strong interviewing and source-development skills

Ability to handle sensitive material and protect source identities

Experience working within culturally tight-knit or closed communities is a plus

Independent, reliable, and detail-oriented

Based in the NY/NJ area or able to travel locally

Compensation

Per-diem or per-story rate, commensurate with experience

Travel expenses covered

Possibility for extended work depending on project needs
