2021 Data Bootcamp for Educators (Online)

Supported by Lumina Foundation and Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University

Update 9/24

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, it has become clear that the safest option for our members and trainers is to move this bootcamp online.

We will still teach the same materials -- spreadsheets, teaching techniques, and building a curriculum -- but in a virtual environment. Sessions will be taught through Zoom, and you will still be able to receive one-on-one help from our team of trainers. You also will receive materials before the bootcamp to make sure your home computer is set up, and you will have ongoing access to course materials and videos. We will use all free software, including Google Sheets.

In these four and a half day bootcamps, educators will receive hands-on training on spreadsheet and database skills, the same skills taught at IRE’s popular Data Journalism Bootcamps, with a focus on learning how to teach these tools in a college setting.

Topics include building data lessons into existing coursework, creating syllabi for data journalism courses, and building hands-on teaching skills. Attendees will receive IRE’s training materials and data, which can be used in their classes.

The bootcamps will be taught by IRE’s experienced trainers and a college-level data journalism professor. The bootcamps are open to anyone teaching journalism at a college or university, regardless of academic title.

We also are modifying the bootcamp dates to avoid the weekend since we no longer need to allow travel dates. The new dates will be Jan. 4-8. The bootcamp will run from 11 am - 6 pm ET each day, except Jan. 8, which will be 11 am to 2 pm ET.

Additional details including fees, scholarships and a tentative schedule can be found here.
