It is with the heaviest hearts that the IRE Board and staff share the news that our executive director, Diana R. Fuentes, died unexpectedly today in Washington, D.C. As we process this loss, we invite you to join us in reflecting on the incredible impact she had on all of us, and on IRE.

The IRE Board of Directors will hold an Emergency Board Meeting on Sunday, March 22, at 3 pm Eastern. Discussion follows the unexpected passing of IRE Executive Director Diana Fuentes. A brief agenda is available here.

Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. IRE was formed to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources.

IRE provides members access to thousands of reporting tipsheets and other materials through its Resource Center and hosts conferences and specialized training across the country. Programs of IRE include the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR), a collaboration between IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism.

A partnership between The Associated Press and PBS FRONTLINE that dug deeply into evidence of war crimes in Ukraine earned the first place prize in the 2022 Philip Meyer Journalism Award.  Other top honors go to The Los Angeles Times for its project “Extreme Heat’s Deadly Toll,” and a collaboration between The Marshall Project, WOVU and Cleveland Documenters that gives a comprehensive assessment of multiple systems that have bolstered inequities in a marginalized community.
