Description

Dangerous Pursuit, the initial investigation and supplemental coverage, explored how Arkansas State Police increasingly turned to PIT maneuvers. The maneuver is intended to end a car chase and involves forcibly hitting and spinning out a driver. Several cases were deadly. In Arkansas, these stops weren’t being talked about and many times police never publicly acknowledged they happened. Our reporting uncovered how State Police often used PIT maneuvers in stops that started as minor traffic offenses, several cases involved minors who were passengers, and speeds frequently exceeded 50 mph, which is widely considered a safety standard by law enforcement nationally. This investigation examined State Police policy and ultimately led to significant changes.
