Fans of the National Football League cannot ignore the growing body of evidence revealing that the game is hurting – and perhaps killing – many of the men who play it. In a series of reports, KING 5 put a laser focus on Seattle’s hometown team, to show fans the devastating impacts on former Seahawks players. The two-year project included player surveys, interviews and documentation that exposed the challenges faced by Seahawks in their football afterlives.
KING 5's reporting led to a new law in Washington state and a new task force targeting people who are prohibited from owning guns. The stories focused on gun laws that are supposed to keep firearms out of the hands of two classes of dangerous people: Those with criminal records, and those accused of domestic violence. Two separate series of investigative reports revealed that those laws were not enforced by the criminal justice system, and victims were paying for that with their lives.
“Last of the Institutions” is a multi-part series exposing Washington state’s outdated social policy of continued segregation and isolation of people with a developmental disability through institutionalization. Despite decades of research showing institutionalization is detrimental to people, and the Dept. of Justice’s stance that segregation of the disabled is a form of unlawful discrimination, Washington operates more institutions and houses more people in them than nearly every other state in the country. http://www.king5.com/story/news/local/investigations/2015/12/03/last-institutions/76123472/ https://vimeo.com/k5investigators/last-of-the-institutions
