KGTV's reporting revealed that John Earnest, a 19-year-old college student, presented an invalid state hunting license when he purchased the AR-15 style firearm from a San Diego gun dealer. The dealer accepted the license and allowed Earnest to apply to purchase the firearm with the Department of Justice, which erroneously approved the sale - despite the invalid license.
