RE Holly Whisenhunt Stephen Fellowships provide assistance to attend an in-person Data Journalism Bootcamp taking place in Columbia, Missouri.

We will be offering the following data bootcamps in 2026:

  • January 12-16, 2026 Google Sheets deep dive
  • March 23-27, 2025 Google Sheets + AI for reporting
  • August 3-7, 2026, Advanced Data Journalism Bootcamp: Python

 

Description

Established by IRE and WTHR-Indianapolis to honor Holly Whisenhunt Stephen, an award-winning journalist and longtime IRE member, who died November 2008 after a long battle with cancer.

Who is eligible?

TV and/or radio journalists. Students are not eligible.

What does the fellowship provide?

  • One-year IRE membership/renewal ($75 value)
  • Complimentary boot camp registration
  • Travel stipend ($750)

Required application materials:

  • LinkedIn page or link to resume
  • Links to two clips showcasing investigative work
  • Explain a data story to tackle after boot camp
