Summary The New Times reports on the abuse of the hormone EPO by athletes, especially elite cyclists. EPO, made by Amgen, raises the amount of oxygen the blood can carry. There isn't any test to detect it yet because it mimics the natural human hormone too closely. The company, which makes $3 billion a year, is not taking any steps to combat the use of EPO, such as putting a marker in it that could be detected. The Tour de France and other major sporting events have been rocked by scandal related to EPO use, but still little pressure is being put on pharmaceutical companies to prevent abuse.
