  • Reports of Abuse

"Several reports written by senior members of women's religious orders and by an American priest assert that sexual abuse of nuns by priests, including rape, is a serious problem, especially in Africa and other parts of the developing world. The reports allege that some Catholic clergy exploit their financial and spiritual authority to gain sexual favors from religious women, many of whom, in developing countries, are culturally conditioned to be subservient to men. The reports obtained by NCR- some recent, some in circulation at least seven years- say priests at times demand sex in exchange for favors, such as permission or certification to work in a given diocese." John Allen Jr. and Pamela Schaeffer detail more.

  • Nukes in Space: Bush and the New Push for Galactic Warfare

Drawing on military documents and other sources, this left-of-center publication reveals U.S. plans for to put weapons in space. "Some $6 billion a year -- plus funds in the 'black' or secret -- have been going into U.S. space military activities." Space-based weapons would violate the provisions of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, Grossman writes. Among the initiatives for space-based warfare mentioned in the military documents: development of two space-based lasers, one of which is already being developed; mining the surface of the moon for precious materials; building lunar foxholes where U.S. spacecraft could hide to intercept shipments of materials from the moon to other countries. Today, with space laser technology not yet ready for deployment, "U.S. military plans for space will likely involve the use of nuclear power as an energy source for space-based weapons."
