Disposable Heroes
The original story focused on Iraqi war veteran James Elliott, who suffered a psychotic breakdown and was stun gunned by police while taking the drug Chantix in a smoking cessation study by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The series examined the use of military veterans as guinea pigs in drug experiments conducted by the federal government and exposed numerous ethical lapses, including a system-wide failure to notify participants when the Food and Drug Administration issues new drug warnings.

Over My Dead Body
Mary Spicuzza of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times looks at the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on U.S. soldiers returning from the war in Iraq. Her story looks at the life and death of one such soldier who committed suicide at the age of 25 as a result of PTSD. Experts say the number of soldiers returning home from Iraq face emotional trauma worse than those who served in Vietnam decades ago.

Discharged and Dishonored
Adams and Young from the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau investigated the Department of Veterans Affairs to see how it was handling veterans' disability compensation programs. They found inconsistencies among states, over half a million eligible veterans who were not receiving benefits, a 23 percent in processing claims, and more than 13,700 veterans who died in the past decade while waiting for an appeal on their claims to be resolved, among other problems.
