  • Follow the Money: Congress & TARP Oversight

    This series of watchdog stories look at spending in Congress and use of TARP funds. They used FOIA requests to gain access to TARP contracts and called into questions some questionable charitable work, sweetheart deals, financial disclosures, fund-raising, earmarks and more.

  • Foreclosure Deepens Mysteries Surrounding Westwood Church

    After having foreclosure proceedings brought against "a church in Memphis' Westwood neighborhood" the Daily News investigated. It found that the property had been sold to a Tampa, Fla. church and the site had a history of neglect.

  • The Cult of Ole

    The Dallas Observer investigates Ole Anthony, the leader of the Trinity Foundation who has carved out a niche for himself as "watchdog of Televangelists." He has helped expose Televangelists' practices, including going undercover for ABC TV's PrimeTime Live to examine "dubious fund-raising tactics or cult-like practices." This story examines Anthony himself, finding that "he used manipulative and abusive cult-like techniques on his own followers. His insistence that they take in the homeless put their lives at risk. And his undercover tactics were often unfair and inaccurate.

  • Charity Abuse

    The authors investigated false claims from groups at Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle claiming to be fund-raising for shelters for abused women and children.

  • Siplin Investigation

    The investigation centers on State Senator Gary Siplin and his use of 40% of his campaign contributions on a consultant called Success Campaigns that hadn't existed for more than ten years. On further investigation the authors found more inaccuracies within the senators finances and other misconduct.

  • Secrets and Lies: bin Laden, Damra and the Birth of Terror in America

    This investigation uncovered the strong ties between Fawaz Damra, a seemingly peaceful spiritual leader of Ohio's largest mosque, and Osama bin Laden. The investigators found that before moving to Ohio, Damra headed a radical mosque in Brooklyn, to which the people behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing belonged. Furthermore, he was directly involved in fund-raising for terrorist "charities." Damra's charity was the predecessor of Al Qaeda, and gave bin Laden a foothold in America.

  • Changing of the Guards

    This in-depth look at Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's personal security guards revealed many problems within the Executive Protection Unit. Not only did the reporters uncover negligence and misconduct on the part of the police officers, but it found deeper flaws in the way the system was set up to abuse taxpayers' money. For example, tens of thousands of dollars were spent to drive police vehicles across the country for fund-raising and personal events.

  • Legislation for sale

    This investigation of the Ohio Speaker of the House uncovered a campaign fund-raising scheme in which donations are subtly tied to legislation. Among the findings are lobbyists who said they made contributions to gain favorable treatment from the speaker, secret campaign accounts used to promote the speaker's handpicked successors for leadership positions, and allegations that he took kickbacks from vendors involved in House campaigns. The series prompted FBI and IRS investigations.

  • Computer study of Cuomo donors finds correlation with contracts; Mr. Cuomo's fund-raising overkill

    This report uses computer assisted analysis reporting to reveal correlations between Gov. Mario Cuomo's campaign donations and state government contracts. The analysis revealed that Cuomo's largest campaign contributors had close ties to the state government.
