Excel Mini Boot Camp (Thursday)
Excel Mini Boot Camp on Thursday, June 14 from 2:30 – 6 p.m. If you want to really dig deep, you need to know your way around data and electronic records. This hands-on session introduces data analysis with spreadsheets. In one afternoon you’ll learn to sort, select, summarize and graphically display data. With Excel’s powerful formulas, filtering and pivot tables, you’ll turn data into a tipsheet to help guide your reporting and mine data for stories. Unleash the power of spreadsheets to help you ask smarter questions, work more efficiently and produce more watchdog reporting. Attendees must bring their own laptops loaded with Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or 2010. To register please click here. Tableau for Beginnners
Thursday, June 14
9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Learn how to create beautiful, interactive data visualizations on short deadlines. No programming required.
You’ll learn everything you need to build data visualizations and publish them to your website just like a video. We’ll teach you how to:
- Connect to Excel files and other data
- Create maps and charts
- Format them beautifully
- Make them interactive
Tableau Public is a free tool for journalists. No previous experience with Tableau is necessary to take this class. You must be registered for the pre-day to take this class. A few seats will be available for this session on a first come basis at the conference.
Pre-registration for Tableau for Beginners is closed. A few seats will be available Thursday morning, June 14 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please arrive a few minutes early to claim a seat.
Tableau for Pros
Thursday, June 14
1:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Take your data visualization skills to the next level. In this class we’ll push Tableau’s capabilities further to create more complex visualizations. You’ll learn how to:
- Clean and format dirty data
- Use multiple data sources in the same visualization
- Build more advanced visualizations
- Employ advanced interactive elements
Tableau Public is a free tool for journalists. Class participants should have some experience with Tableau or have taken the morning beginner course. You must be registered for the pre-day to take this class. A few seats will be available for this session on a first come basis at the conference.
