Description

In July 1977 heavy storms broke open the Laurel Run Dam, killing 39 people. A 10 - year legal battle, which ended with out-of-court settlements for the victim's families, hid the reasons for the dam failure. By unsealing those records and obtaining hundreds of others, The Tribune-Democrat discovered that a long history of poor maintenance and unheeded warnings preceded the dam break.
