Description

The Westword tells the story of Dick Berger, the director of multiple Colorado-based suicide and crisis hotlines. Berger claims his 24-hour hotlines are a "safety net for people who are depressed, suicidal or in need." However, locals are complaining that the lines are frequently busy for hours at a time. Berger readily admits he leaves the lines off the hook at times when he wants privacy. Critics also say that Berger uses sexually inappropriate language with women callers and staffs his phone lines with untrained volunteers.
