The Chicago Sun-Times got a Cook County highway supervisor to admit for publication that he participated in rigged hiring schemes, under pressure from the patronage chief for the County Board president. The supervisor, Eric Petraitis, had the documents to back up his statements. The day after the story ran, the patronage chief was suspended. One month later, the FBI raided several Cook County departments, looking for additional evidence.
