This year, seven of the board’s 13 seats are up for election.
In addition to candidates for the board of directors, the ballot also will include candidates for two seats on IRE’s Contest Committee (one-year term), which judges the IRE Awards. Those interested in judging will apply using the same procedure as IRE Board candidates and will be selected on the same ballot. Contest Committee candidates’ information will also be available on the IRE website, but they do not participate in the board candidates forum.
The Board serves as the governing body of IRE and meets several times a year to discuss and vote on IRE business. It meets twice in person, at the annual IRE Conference and at an annual board retreat, and it also holds quarterly virtual meetings.
Board members also serve on committees and task forces made up of board members and appointed non-board IRE members.
The seats are for two-year terms, and incumbents may seek re-election to the board as many times as they want.
A board position is unpaid, and board members and their news organizations are expected to pay all, or a substantial amount, of travel expenses to in-person board meetings. If a news organization is unable to pay travel expenses, and it would be a hardship for the board member to take on the costs personally, IRE can provide financial assistance. (See below in the FAQ section for the Board's full policy on travel expenses.)
Candidates must be IRE members in the professional, academic or retired class.
Board members are expected to help raise funds and contribute financial or other resources to the organization.

At the conference, there will be an in-person meet-and-greet session on Thursday, June 20. Check the conference schedule for the time and location. It will start with each candidate giving a speech of 2-3 minutes, followed by an informal gathering where members can visit with the candidates, ask questions and chat.
No. Nominators no longer will speak at the conference. They only are required to submit a statement to be published with the candidate’s information online. Only the candidates will speak at the meet-and-greet session at the conference.

Starting June 4, new or returning members (Professional, Academic, Student or Retiree) will receive a ballot on the Tuesday following processing of the membership. In 2024, the IRE Board approved a new policy regarding travel expenses to board meetings. The policy does not change the longstanding rule that board members and their news organizations are expected to pay all, or a substantial amount, of travel expenses to board meetings. But the policy outlines how IRE may support board members who need assistance to travel to mandatory in-person meetings. Under the policy, a board member must first request financial support from their employer. If there are costs that are not covered, and it would be a hardship for the board member to take on the costs personally, the board member may submit a request for assistance to IRE's executive director. If there is funding available, the executive director can facilitate the support.
Yes! The voting platform is a web-based system.
The rules state the board will hold a meeting to confirm the candidates who filed by the deadline and those candidates will be elected by acclamation. Staff will notify the membership via email about the remaining open seats. Candidates will have one week to file and submit the necessary materials. Candidates’ materials will be posted on the IRE website as soon as possible but no later than a specified date. The election will then follow the same schedule as outlined for the original election.
