The Indianapolis Star uncovered and disclosed facts about Rep. Sam Turpin, the chairman of the powerful Indiana House Ways and Means Committee. The stories disclosed that Turpin had secretly accepted a total of more than $40,000 in payments since 1993. The source of those payments was a major state riverboat casino contractor, American Consulting Engineers Inc. The Star reported that Turpin received these monthly payments as his "consulting retainer." (March 3, 24, April 19, 1996)
