Consumer's Digest reports on pension plans that are underfunded and listed as risky by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, the sole insurer of pension plans. Included is an account of Consumer's Digest's efforts to get PBGC to reveal the 500 plans on their "Early Warning List." At first the CD reporter met with continual refusals. Finally, partnered with the Public Citizen Litigation Group, CD sued PBGC for the information and succeeded in obtaining the list. "The piece could have some lasting value in releasing pension information for some 42 million workers in some 55,000 pension plans."
