This editor should have a proven record of success in conceiving, producing and editing well-written, high-impact work on a variety of topics and at a variety of speeds, including in the competitive environment of a major breaking news event. The editor should have demonstrated experience in coordinating all aspects of digital projects, including multimedia elements, data visualizations and cross-platform promotion. Experience running data-driven investigations and working across large teams is a plus.

The editor will work with our Managing Editor, Enterprise, to manage a team of reporters producing groundbreaking original stories on significant newsmakers, the biggest news stories of the moment and the major storylines of the year. The editor should be full of ideas on how to uncover important and revelatory information and should demonstrate persistence and creativity in guiding reporters to turn fascinating, unmissable pieces.

In short, there are two areas of editorial focus:

The journalism this editor oversees could include, for example, an exposé of the harm caused by a wealthy CEO’s company, an examination of government failures in the days after a disaster, or a piece on the first interview with a key voice at the center of a high-interest storyline.

This role can be based in New York, Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles with a hybrid work schedule.

  • Edit some major projects every year, with a focus on significant companies, institutions and public figures and reporting that has an impact.
  • Manage reporters on the Enterprise team, working with them to produce journalism that sets us apart. This includes guiding the reporters in developing ideas, coaching them on reporting and writing, and editing their stories.
  • Work with a range of journalistic talent from both digital and TV, including digital staff members who want to elevate their game into long-form work, television reporters and producers, and freelancers.

Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of experience at major newspapers, websites or magazines, including at least 3 years reporting and editing investigative work.
  • A track record of breaking or editing big news stories that received national attention or award recognition and spurred change.
  • Strong ability to prioritize reporting focus areas in a rapidly changing news environment, driving the most important and original angles.
  • Deep familiarity with document- and data-based reporting; news-driven and business investigations; and accountability journalism.
  • A proven ability to partner with video, data, graphics and social teams to deliver engaging digital stories.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Ability to manage quick-turn accountability stories based on breaking news while also launching and guiding longer-term projects.
  • Creative approach to enterprise features and investigations and willingness to experiment with new formats and technologies.
  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams, including digital reporters and editors, TV producers and correspondents, and art, visuals and platforms teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to management.
  • Exceptional leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively across a large news organization.
