For two years, players on the junior high boys basketball team allegedly sexually assaulted teammates multiple times on multiple occasions. The school board held secret expulsion hearings and attempted to cover up the allegations. Board members also voted to lessen the recommended punishment for two players while throwing out completely punishment for other players. During the investigation, The Record discovered that the board had held multiple secret meetings in violation of the state Freedom of Information Act, the superintendent failed to contact the child abuse hotline immediately as required by law, the sheriff’s office failed to investigate the sexual-assault allegations, and school board members with conflicts of interest voted in and tried to sway the outcome of the investigations.
