Description

On the fringes of Washington state’s special education system is a network of privately run schools, advertising an array of expensive therapeutic services to public school districts to help students with severe disabilities. But once the students — and the tens of millions of tax dollars that follow them — enter these schoolhouses, public accountability and transparency stops. Until the Seattle Times and ProPublica wrote about them, few outside the education community knew they existed, rendering them Invisible Schools.
