Description

St. Louis Public Radio embarked on a year-long investigation into how former defense contractor Litton Industries and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) handled trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater contamination around an industrial facility in Springfield, Missouri. This standalone story is based on dozens of interviews, thousands of pages of previously unreported court records and public records maintained by MDNR to find the state agency responsible for environmental regulation and oversight failed to disclose the nature of contamination to local residents for decades. The investigation found that MDNR knew as far back as the 1980s of potential groundwater issues.
