Two years ago, a federal investigation into money from a sneaker company funneled to basketball recruits and their families touched down in North Carolina. FBI agents had learned that one of the recruits on the receiving end was Dennis Smith Jr., a highly regarded shooting guard from Fayetteville who had signed with N.C. State University.
