What started as a viewer question led to a months-long, six-county, undercover investigation exposing a controversial Colorado law either overtly being skirted or not being followed at all. Overloaded is a three-part, multiple follow-up investigation by 9Wants to Know at KUSA-TV 9NEWS NBC in Denver. The investigation looked in the continued sale of large-capacity gun magazines despite a 2013 law banning the sale, transfer or possession. We found gun stores selling “parts kits,” which are large-capacity gun magazines disassembled and sold in one transaction. We also found gun stores selling large-capacity gun magazines as though the law banning them didn’t exist. We took our findings to lawmakers, sheriffs and law enforcement. Any attempt to either address deficiencies with this law or repeal it will be in progress as you judge this, since Colorado’s legislature is in session from January to May.
