Description

After learning that hedge funds and other institutional investors had infiltrated Charlotte’s single-family rental market, we dug in to uncover the scale of the industry in North Carolina, and to examine the impact on renters and the housing market.

The journalists found that, in the space of a decade, corporate landlords had gone from owning nearly zero houses in North Carolina to owning more than 40,000. In Charlotte, these companies own one out of every four rental homes. The reporting team also uncovered a complex business model designed to squeeze every drop of profit out of houses and tenants.
