The News Tribune conducts a computer-assisted investigation into the purchase of handguns by Washington residents. The series found that the purchase of handguns had increased over five years, and that handgun murders in the state in 1992 were largely committted by otherwise law-abiding citizens who picked up a handgun and lashed out in anger to settle an argument or a fight. Only a small percentage of murders were gang-related, Jan. 16 - 17, 1994.
