Description

William H. Barrett was making his second run for county sheriff. He was promoting himself as having extensive background in law enforcement and as a Vietnam combat veteran. He intimated that his service was top-secret. In the course of covering the campaign, the GT reported that the candidate had spent his service years as a Marine Corps cook at Camp LaJeune, N.C., and had never been in Southeast Asia. He had wildly inflated his work history in law enforcement. The candidate's campaign staff lied about the findings of an "expert" hired to corroborate the candidate's record and refute newspaper reports after it was called into question.
