Description

On June 6, 1993, a rust old freighter the "Golden Venture" ran aground off New York's Rockaway beach. The ship had an unusual cargo: 287 half-starved peasants who had paid over $30,000 each to be smuggled into the United States. This report traces the path of the Golden Venture back to China. It attempts to find out why people would pay as much money and risk their lives to come to the U.S. It also exposes how these refugees have been in virtual indentured servitude, working is sweatshops to repay their hefty degbts tot he people smugglers. (1995)
