Description

When Lowell and Susan Engel, a mentally slow, elderly couple from New Brighton, disappeared from their retirement home shortly after inheriting $85,000 relatives and authorities quickly became suspicious. This Staten Island Advocate series follows the grisly story from the couple's disappearance to the discovery of their bludgeoned bodies in the wooded mountains of Pennsylvania. Developments in the case revealed a trusted friend, Rev. James S. Castria, stole $40,000 from a joint account he established with the couple and used the money to pay off debts before murdering the Engels and committing suicide himself. (February 1 - July 21, 1995)
