Description

The Progressive investigates the problem exploitation of child labor by the agriculture industry. Children of migrant farmers, particularly minority migrant farmers, often work alongside parents in the fields exposing themselves to accidents and injuries protected against by other industries. Parents' inability to afford daycare means that children have no other place to go but to the fields with parents. Seasonal crops mean older children fall behind in school because they are allowed to work 40 hours a week during harvest seasons. (August 1996)
