Description

The story looked at the enrollment counts Ohio high schools' reports to the state for funding purposes, then compared those figures with the numbers reported to the athletic association for placement in sports divisions. Like many states, Ohio places schools in divisions based on enrollment, with the goal of having similar-sized schools competing in athletics. The Cincinnati Enquirer found that 70 percent of the time the two enrollment numbers don't match, calling into question the validity of the most basic element of the school-funding formula. (June 23, 25 and 26, 1996)
