Congressional Quarterly investigates where campaign contributions came from and where they went during the 1996 elections. The series found freshmen Republicans raising large numbers of political action committee contributions from the industries affected by the committees they sat on. For national conventions the series discovered how the big givers were the same corporations that regularly gave to political campaigns and organizations, and how they benefited from the federal subsidy programs that lawmakers refused to cut even as they slashed aid to the poor in order to balance the budget.
