Description

The Star Ledger looks at the status of Superfund cleanups in New Jersey, where 107 sites have been listed on the national priority list for cleanup, more than any other state. The investigation found bureaucratic bumbling, red tape and endless litigation that stymied cleanups, much to the dismay of people who live near the sites. The science behind many cleanups overstates the risk the sites posed to the public, leading to inordinately expensive cleanups. (May 19 -20, 1996)
