The series revealed that he company holding a five-year, $2.2 billion Energy Department contract to manage the cleanup of Fernald, a former uranium-processing plant during the Cold War: bilked taxpayers of millions of dollars; violated or ignored government safety standards; developed a pilot vitrification plant that so far has cost taxpayers more than $70 million; wasted more than $16 million on a taxpayer-paid buyout of its own private employees to cut costs, and then turned around and re-filled the positions; threw away millions of dollars worth of never-used equipment, parts and supplies; and developed a secret plan to change the U.S. EPA-approved vitrification project that would escalate costs more than $240 million.
