Description

In a more than three month investigation, the San Francisco Chronicle found that the state Department of Corrections tried to conceal internal reports that guards were staging deadly fights among inmates at Corcoran State Prison. The department was so desperate to suppress the reports that it sent investigators on a high-speed car chase of FBI agents who had received incriminating evidence from prison guards. The Chronicle also learned that the attempted cover-up occurred while the corrections agency was citing escalating prison violence to support its requests for billions of dollars in new facilities.
