WJLA revealed alarming evidence that America's largest railroad companies are running unsafe trains. The investigation documented trains leaving rail yards with defective equipment, improper train inspections, inadequate record keeping, and a repeated pattern of safety violations on every major rail line. The stories also showed federal regulators are well aware of these problems, but the information obtained from their files had never been made public. (April 29 - 30; June 6, 1996)
