"Caught Off Guard" revealed how school crossing guards for some Chicago schools negligently ignore the children they are supposed to protect. Using hidden cameras, WFLD's investigative unit spent dozens of mornings and afternoons near Chicago schools, documenting how crossing guards -- hired and trained by the Chicago Police Department -- failed to perform their duties. WFLD found guards talking with each other, seeking shelter from the weather, and leaving their jobs early while taxpayers pay them $2.3 million per year to help children cross the streets.
