Description

WTMJ conducted a probe of the entire para-transit industry in Wisconsin. The investigation found in Milwaukee County alone, more than 160 small van companies compete for a piece of the multimillion dollar pie created by subsidy programs. While the agencies that oversee and administer the government funds keep watch against possible billing fraud, WTMJ discovered virtually none of the oversight at local or state levels focused on safety issues. The investigation documented widespread safety problems. (July 16, 17, 1996)
