Description

KPHO conducts a five month investigation and described a 12-year-long criminal enterprise that netted military equipment valued in excess of $100 million dollars -- some of which ended up with militia groups and in unfriendly foreign countries. It was operation made all the more extraordinary because it was based inside the Arizona State Prison - and run by a 63-year-old inmate serving a 150-year sentence. The series disclosed how prison officials gave the inmate freedom to travel throughout the state as a trusty; how he conned or bribed military personnel to let him drive away with vehicles and equipment; and how he sold that equipment - using the prison as "cover" to make the whole operation appear legitimate. (April 19, November 6, 7, 8, 1996)
